- Request, offer, invite, and reply appropriately using memorized phrases.
- Recognize and use appropriate register/ honorifics in a limited number of simple social situations such as greetings, leave-takings and introductions.
- Ask and answer simple questions about family, animals, food, the time, likes, and dislikes.
- Ask questions about physical appearance including body parts, character and personality traits of friends, family, classmates and answer using a list of traits.
- Identify and produce memorized phrases of greetings, leave-takings and introductions.
- Read and answer questions about physical appearance including body parts, character and personality traits of friends, family, and classmates, using a list of traits.
Students can understand and interpret writing and speech on a variety of topics in Arabic.
By the end of Grade 4 students can:
- Recognize pieces of information: often understand words, phrases, and simple sentences related to everyday life.
- Listen and sometimes understand simple questions or statements on familiar topics related to biographical information, such as names and ages, and numbers.
- Read and understand some learned or memorized words and phrases of written classroom language in Arabic, such as names, numbers, and food-, family- and school-related vocabulary.
Students will present information, concepts, and ideas to listeners and/or readers on a variety of topics in the language studied.
By the end of Grade 4 students can:
- Present songs, poems or stories in Arabic.
- Present brief personal descriptions on familiar topics in Arabic such as self, friends, pets and other animals, and family.
- Illustrate and present materials in Arabic such as an advertisement, poster, or menu.
- Prepare illustrated stories (big books, posters, dioramas, cartoons) about activities or events in students’ personal lives, and share these with a reading audience.

- Identify major geographic features (rivers, mountains, deserts, forests) of a country in which Arabic is spoken.
- Describe the climate and typical seasonal weather patterns in various parts of a country in which Arabic is spoken.
- Identify products native to a community, region, or country in which Arabic is spoken.
